Residents evacuated from houses near the Mt Allan forest fire northwest of Dunedin have been allowed to return to their homes this morning.

Flagstaff and Swampy Summit walking tracks will be also re-opened as the risk of the fire spreading has diminished.

Dunedin City Council Principal Rural Fire Officer Graeme Stil, said he was quietly confident the fire, which started in Wenita's Mt Allan Forest on Tuesday, could now be contained within its existing boundaries.

Sixty rural fire-fighters and heavy earthmoving machinery are working in conjunction with ten helicopters to bring the 820 hectare fire under control.

While there were some flare-ups in unburned fuels within the boundaries, so long as current weather conditions did not change significantly there was minimal risk of the fire escalating.

Efforts were still being concentrated on controlling any spread past the eastern perimeter towards the Dunedin City Council water catchment area.

While confident the fire was being held, Mr Still was planning for many more days of fire-fighting operations to ensure the fire is extinguished.

Local and regional fire managers will resume control of the situation once they have had a break thanks to a National Fire Incident management team that arrived in Dunedin on Thursday.
