Any Government funding to the Otago Stadium would be "modest", Prime Minister John Key said at a press conference yesterday.
He confirmed the cabinet was considering a request for funding to cover the shortfall of between $15 million and $30 million, but had yet to make a final decision.
When asked what contributions the Government could make towards the project, he replied: "In the end, if Government made a contribution it would be a modest contribution".
Last night, questions for the prime minister were directed to Finance Minister Bill English.
A spokesman for Mr English confirmed the finance minister had talked separately to Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin and Carisbrook Stadium Trust chairman Malcolm Farry before yesterday's council meeting.
Earlier in the day, the stadium was discussed in Cabinet. Several points were discussed, including the fact that the decision on whether the stadium should proceed was one the council had to make.
Cabinet would be prepared to discuss "progressing" the stadium once a decision had been reached, he said.
Government funding was under heavy demand and the project would have to stack up against others on its merits, he said.
