The ceremony attracted a diverse crowd, including Quakers, monks and representatives from the refugee community.
Rula Talahma spoke to the crowd about the geographical displacement caused by conflict.
‘‘People not only lose their loved ones but they also lose their space in the world.''
Ms Talahma praised Dunedin for the way the city had responded to the new Syrian refugees.
However people could still be more tolerant, and tolerance was imperative to overall peace, she said.
The ceremony included musical performances and a pledge to work to remove all causes of war.
