The dark halls of Olveston will be transformed by blooming displays of succulent perennials and sheep made from hydrangeas this weekend.

Property manager Jeremy Smith said about 30 floral artists had entered arrangements inspired by the art and visual beauty of the Victorian house for "The Art of Flowers'' exhibition.

"We wanted them to submit something in flowers inspired by the contents of the house.

"At the end of the day, florists take that in as wide a context as possible.''

The exhibition, now in its third year, was in keeping with the house, he said.

"I'd be surprised if the Theomins didn't fill their house with flowers on a regular basis.''

Entries ranged from a bunch of flowers made from cards in the games room to a pack of sheep - dubbed The Bucolic Plague - in hues of blue and green hydrangeas, he said.

Floral sheep maker Jennifer Anglm said she spent about six-weeks looking for plentiful hydrangea supplies.

"I don't think there is a hydrangea left in the city.''

The sheep were inspired by a cattle statue and pastoral paintings in a bedroom.

The low-maintenance pets would reside on her lawn after the exhibition.

There were no plans for more hydrangea animals.

"You just can't make hydrangea cows, it doesn't work ...

"Well, maybe Highland cattle would.''

The exhibition will finish tomorrow.
