A little rain was not enough to deter the 200 people who came for the Taieri river bank walk yesterday.

The 9km walk from Outram to Allanton was organised by the Taieri Lions Club and gave people access to private property boasting some of the area's historic sites.

They included the Abbotsford farm, one of the earliest settled farms on the Taieri; the Old Allanton Rd Bridge, which had serviced Dunedin Airport; and the Outram Railway Bridge, which closed in 1953.

Dunedin man Neville Struthers said it was particularly nostalgic to walk past the old railway line.

"I remember watching the train going along that line,'' he said.

Mosgiel woman Emma Parks, who lived on a farm on one side of the bank and walked the track with her sons Alex (13) and William (9), said she had never been on the other side.

"It's a totally different view.''

Taieri Lions Club project convener Bevan Bisset said the walk was organised about every three years and this was the third one.

About 12 volunteers were stationed at different points of interest to direct walkers, he said.

There was one food stop along the way, which offered sausages and bread, pikelets and hot drinks.
