A glorious giant poppy is set to glow at Montecillo Veterans Home & Hospital in Dunedin.

Otago Settlers' Association president Susan Schweigman said the association, at the start of World War 1 in 1914, gave a hall, now known as the Smith Gallery at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum, for people to work for the war effort including sewing and knitting.

For the recent war centenary commemoration, the association made two banners with material poppies for the museum to display.

Many poppies were left over, and Montecillo Veterans Home & Hospital accepted the association's offer of a giant poppy hanging, made from about 1000 knitted and crocheted poppies.

The poppies were mostly made from wool yarn and were black and different shades of red.

The core team of five women in the craft group began making the hanging in November and were on track to give it to Montecillo on Anzac Day on April 25.

‘‘The hanging looks glorious. The mixture of red tones makes it glow, which gives it life ... it will look stunning when it is put on the wall,'' Mrs Schweigman said.
