Parts of Otago Harbour turned red as shoals of krill made their way towards the edge of the shore near Portsmouth Dr.

Local resident Paul Van Kampen saw the krill while on a bike ride on Monday morning. He said they formed "wave and circle patterns and [congregated in] masses on the surface."

He noted there was much more krill in the morning than when the photos were taken and that as the tide went out they "washed up and died", although added that the "birds had a great feed".
