The Southern Sinfonia started its school tour with a bang at St Brigid's School in Dunedin yesterday.

Chloe Woodhouse (9) is pictured on a kettledrum and Jackson Hamilton (7) beats a snare drum as Sinfonia members perform.

The seven musicians, who also played at Grants Brae and St Hilda's Collegiate Schools yesterday, will visit 14 schools during their five-day tour.

The 40-minute programme comprises Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Mozart's Symphony No40, Aaron Copland's Rodeo, Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra, John Williams' Star Wars Theme and Lorde's Royals.

The programme was designed to be a fun and interactive way for young children to enjoy classical music and develop an appreciation for different instruments.

Sinfonia artistic assistant and violinist Hannah Murray said Sinfonia members also demonstrated instruments and answered pupils' questions.
