A charity house auction in Dunedin has raised $100,000, and the proceeds will benefit causes in Otago.
Constructed by Otago Polytechnic building students, the house was auctioned on Saturday. The successful bidders were Colene and Allan Williams, of Mosgiel, who acquired the four-bedroom house for $198,000.
They plan to transport it to their section in Kurow as a holiday home. Also auctioned were houses built by students that require finishing work.
A three-bedroom house sold for $132,000, and a four-bedroom house for $155,000. The proceeds were presented to charity United Way, which distributes money to other causes.
After receiving the cheque, chief executive Don Oliver, of Auckland, said the polytech could have kept the proceeds of the auction, but chose to be generous and give the money away.
It was an investment in the region, he said, emphasising that all of the proceeds would be distributed in Otago.
Now in its ninth year, the charity house project has raised $820,000 for charity over that time.
Polytechnic chief executive Phil Ker said the auction was a good result for everyone: the students, polytech staff, home buyers, and local community.
