Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull has added his signature to the national campaign to end men's violence against women - and is calling on others to do the same.

The White Ribbon Campaign was launched this week and Mr Cull joined mayors from across the country in vowing to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women.

Mr Cull said he was proud to add his support.

''Violence towards women is never acceptable. Violence isn't just physical - it's also emotional or verbal behaviour used to control someone through fear.

''As a community, we need to nurture a culture that encourages respect and rejects violence. As men, we can help to achieve this by challenging comments, statements or actions that are abusive, and by supporting those who wish to change their violent behaviour.''

The campaign would also feature a week-long White Ribbon Ride motorcycle ride travelling the length of the country, which was due in Dunedin on November 23.

The campaign culminates with White Ribbon Day on November 25.
