Dunedin police warn of car buying 'scam'

Police are warning Dunedin residents about a person purporting to be local car salesman Andrew Graham, and asking for seller's bank details so a bank deposit can be made.

The offers of purchase are received from an unverified email address under the name Andrew Graeme and outlines steps including shipping the car for the "Dunedin stock".

Police said today that they have spoken with Mr Graham, of Stadium Cars, and confirmed these emails have not been initiated by him.

Mr Graham said all correspondence from himself or the Stadium Cars team would come from the official @stadiumcars.co.nz email address.

Police said they know a number of residents have received the emails, but have taken steps to contact Mr Graham directly to clarify this with him. By doing this, they have avoided giving out personal details.

Police said people should ask for as much information as possible when buying and selling items.

If the other party say they are from a reputable company, but the email address does not look official, people should confirm this by calling the company using the number listed in the phonebook or on their website and confirming the information given.

Police would like to hear from anyone who has been emailing an Andrew Graeme who does not have the official Stadium Cars email tail listed above. They should contact police on 03 471-4800.
