Tented scaffolding is erected around St Patrick's Basilica in Macandrew Rd, Dunedin, as part of a $1.7 million preservation project.
St Patrick's redevelopment committee chairman Sean Toomey said the building was constructed in 1880, and the current work involved earthquake-strengthening, removing the roof to fix leaks and install new damp-proof floors.
As well as preserving the building, it would be adapted for ''a more modern use'', he said.
The pews would be removed and individual seating would be installed, which could be easily moved and adapted for any purpose.
''When work is completed, it will return to being a church building, but it could also be used for small concerts, large community meetings - it will be a multi-purpose building,'' he said.
The project began in 2014 and is expected to be completed early next year.
