Two suspicious car fires within an hour

Dunedin police are investigating after two cars were deliberately set on fire within an hour of each other.

Firefighters from the Dunedin station were called to a blaze in the car park of the Zingari-Richmond Rugby Football Club, in Eglinton Rd, about 3am yesterday, a Fire Service spokesman said.

They discovered a car well ablaze.

St Kilda firefighters were called to a van on fire in Tower Ave, Waverley, about 3.45am, the spokesman said. It was also well ablaze.

Both fires were deemed suspicious.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said police were investigating both fires.

It was too early to say if they were linked, he said.

Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in those areas between 3am and 4am yesterday should contact Dunedin police on (03) 471-4800.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.

The car blazes follow a family wagon being torched in Caversham last month.

''No doubt any possible links will be investigated,'' Snr Sgt Brown said.

• Invercargill firefighters also attended a car fire about 3am yesterday.

The car was parked in Wyeth St for about a week before it was torched shortly after 3am yesterday, the Fire Service spokesman said.

The fire was also deemed suspicious.
