The trouble-plagued ship Melilla 201 is now ''beached'' at a recycling yard in India.

Transport & Marine Ltd managing director Dennis Nisbet, the owner of the company which tendered for the vessel, said the ship reached Alang, India, on March 2.

The voyage from Otago Harbour took 29 days, and when the ship cleared Customs it was ''beached'' in the Alang ship recycling yard on March 13, Mr Nisbet said.

The ship was tied up at the Birch St wharf in Dunedin for nearly two years after being seized by the Ministry for Primary Industries.

The ministry spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on berthing costs for the 73m factory stern trawler and to fumigate the vessel after it was found to be infested with rats and lice.

Three of its senior officers were found guilty last year of illegal fish dumping.
