More than 1000 children competed in the Weet Bix Kids TRYathlon at Memorial Park in Mosgiel yesterday.

Otago Daily Times reporter Timothy Brown and photographer Gregor Richardson were there to capture the action.

The highest number of competitors in the past five years took to Memorial Park for the Weet Bix Kids TRYathlon yesterday.

Temperatures above 20degC and blue skies greeted the 1076 children who took part. Sanatarium commercial manager Stephen Andrews said the turnout was ''unbelievable''.

''The numbers are up on the last five years,'' he said.

''Last year we had 800.''

The increase was attributed to strong local promotion of the event and, possibly, more disposable income, he said.

He was also impressed by the efforts of the competitors.

''They were awesome,'' he said.

''Every single one of them, you could see them giving it their best shot.''

One child had put so much into his effort, he ''had a bit of a vomit as he crossed the line''.

The camaraderie and athleticism on display was heartening, Mr Andrews said.

Friends Jessie Yee, Kate Coates and Emma Simpson, all of Mosgiel, competed in the individual category.

They were delighted to reach the finish line and ''do pretty well''.

''It was good fun,'' Jessie said.

The highlight was the swimming leg, she said.

The last competitor crossed the finish line shortly before noon and was greeted by a raucous cheer from fellow competitors and supporters.

The children then danced away the early afternoon in the sunshine. Mr Andrews said it was good to see the children ''active and happy''.
