Otago Polytech students Nathan Hill (left) and Josh Drummond work on a car free of charge in the polytech's garage yesterday.
The students were among a group of 32 automotive engineering students who volunteered to service a fleet of community vehicles as part of the Scarfie Army, a group drawing inspiration from Canterbury University's student volunteer army.
As part of the free car clinic day, vehicles belonging to the Cancer Society, the Child Cancer Foundation, Canteen, and Stop Violence Dunedin were given a full service. Other students recently volunteered their services to help out the Northeast Valley Project and their community garden.
The polytechnic employs a part-time Scarfie Army co-ordinator and a series of other volunteer projects are planned for the Scarfie Army in the second half of this year.
