''It was a good opportunity to open the building up and let people see what is going on here now,'' King Edward Court manager Roberta Coutts said yesterday.
''We've had a lot of interest during the day. Some people were interested in the building and we had lots of people who had been to school here and came to reminisce about their school days.''
King Edward Technical College was established as the Dunedin Technical School in 1889, when it offered night education classes in carpentry, chemistry, cookery, domestic economy, typewriting and woodcarving.
The Stuart St building was opened in 1914 and when the Dunedin School of Art amalgamated with the school in 1921, it changed its name to King Edward Technical College, to honour King Edward VII.
The tertiary arm of the college became the Otago Polytechnic in 1966 and the secondary arm became Logan Park High School in 1974. Dunedin football club Dunedin Technical, which was originally known as King Edward Technical College Old Boys, was formed by alumni of the institution.
King Edward Court is now a hub for a variety of interest groups, including a radio station, a recording studio, a climbing room, dance classes and the Fortune Theatre wardrobe.
