A bitch died after a dog fight in South Dunedin last night.
Animal Control team leader Ros MacGill said a pit bullcross died after fighting a bullmastiff and a pit bull at a South Dunedin house where the three dogs had lived for about 10 months.
The owners had gone to the supermarket and left the dogs in the backyard.
‘‘When they got back, one of them was dead. It was quite unexpected. There was no warning signs of the dogs not getting on.''
The owners were responsible but a pack of dogs was always at risk of fighting, especially if they were the same sex.
If an owner left the property, dogs should be locked in a kennel or, if left for a longer period, the animals taken to a pet hotel, she said.
