Beach brides a-dancing

Waitati resident Mandy Mayhem (40) leads Lani Morrison (33), of Port Chalmers, and a bevy of brides during "all brides day" at Doctors Point Beach, north of Dunedin, on Saturday.

Nearly 100 brides danced on the sand to convince the gods to continue the world.

Ms Mayhem said the heavens opened on Saturday but when the brides walked on the beach the rain stopped.

The brides congregated in a bid to save civilisation by appeasing the gods and stopping the Mayan calender prediction of the world ending on December 21.
