Third teen arrested after joyride, burglary

Another teenager has been arrested following a alcohol-fuelled joyride and burglary around greater Dunedin early on Tuesday.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the 15-year-old appeared in the Youth Court yesterday, and was remanded in custody.

Two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, appeared in the Youth Court on Tuesday on jointly-laid charges of unlawfully taking two vehicles.

Alcohol was stolen from the Otago Golf Club and empty bottles were recovered from a Suzuki vehicle stolen from Waitati, after the occupants dumped a taxi nearby. The Suzuki was driven to Helensburgh Rd, where it crashed into a parked van.

A fourth teenager may have been involved, he said.

A pensioner was arrested at the Dunedin Police Station after an officer was assaulted yesterday.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the man was involved in an altercation at the front counter. He became abusive towards police staff and assaulted a member of the public.

The man was arrested, and assaulted an officer while being processed, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

The man was expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court next week on two charges of assault.

• A brewery worker was taken to Dunedin Hospital with bruises after being assaulted on Tuesday night.

Emergency services were called to Speight's Brewery in Rattray St shortly after 8pm, following reports a worker had been assaulted by a member of the public. The alleged offender had earlier asked staff if he could visit the brewery worker, who he claimed was a "friend", Snr Sgt Aitken said.

A 22-year-old was arrested and charged with assault with intent to injure. He was expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday.
