International Languages Week began in Dunedin yesterday with a display of books at the University of the Otago central library, and a student radio broadcast, devoted to German art and culture.

Otago University languages week co-ordinator Dr Antonie Alm said the Dunedin activities were aimed to raise awareness about the many opportunities for learning international languages and culture at the university.

The Otago department of languages and cultures was staging "an exciting array of events" for university students and high school pupils.

International Languages Week has been run throughout much of New Zealand for the past 10 years, and Otago University became involved three years ago.

The Dunedin programme aimed to attract more secondary school pupils, particularly to a cultures quiz being held at the University Union common room at 5pm on Thursday, organisers said.

Each of the first four days of the week is devoted to a different language, starting with German yesterday, followed by Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish and Portuguese.

At noon each day, student radio station Radio One is feature an hour-long live programme focusing on the featured language and culture of the day.

Leander Schulz, a German-born student, is co-ordinating the broadcasts.
