Police search for driver after double hit-and-run

A motorist who drove off after allegedly running a red light and colliding with another car in Dunedin crashed into a second car moments later, only to again flee the scene.

The two crashes occurred within minutes of each other last night and left one motorist with minor injuries, while a second escaped unhurt.

Police were last night still looking for the driver who fled both scenes.

The first crash happened about 9.45pm in Crawford St, near Jervois St.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said it appeared the missing motorist had run a red light before colliding with another car, causing minor injuries to the other driver, but had then driven off.

The fleeing motorist made it only as far as nearby Princes St, before colliding with a second vehicle at the Police St intersection and then again leaving the crash scene, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

Police were called by a member of the public who, it was believed, had unsuccessfully attempted to follow the fleeing motorist, he said.
