David Wilson, of Oamaru, heads towards Lookout Point near Dunedin yesterday, as part of his 2000km ride on an 1880s-style, 54-inch, high-wheeled penny-farthing manufactured in Oamaru.

He is planning to make history the old-fashioned way by being the first person to ride the length of New Zealand on a penny-farthing while generating publicity for Oamaru's Victorian precinct.

His journey started on Stewart Island, and he has spent the past week travelling on the Southern Scenic Route towards Dunedin.

Apart from a few saddle sores and being soaked through by the rain, Mr Wilson said he was relatively comfortable and pleased with his progress.

He is now heading towards Oamaru, where he will stop for a few days before continuing his journey.

Mr Wilson hopes to reach Cape Reinga some time in January.
