Mrs Betro, the oldest member of the Dunedin's Lebanese community, now lives at Yvette Williams Retirement Village in Highgate, but for years lived in High St, where she ran a boarding home.
Her son, Denis Betro, said it was likely her healthy lifestyle - she maintained a large and "wonderful" terraced flower and vegetable garden in High St and never drove, walking everywhere instead - had contributed to his mother's longevity.
He recalled her regularly cooking for 16 people, including her five children, most nights during the 1950s and 1960s.
Mrs Betro will receive a special acknowledgement at next month's "Gathering" in Dunedin of the Lebanese community, as the oldest member of the Dunedin community.
