Alma Betro celebrates her 100th birthday with sons Gerard (left) and Denis Betro in Dunedin yesterday. A large gathering of Mrs Betro's relatives travelled to Dunedin from around the world, to be at her side yesterday.

Mrs Betro, the oldest member of the Dunedin's Lebanese community, now lives at Yvette Williams Retirement Village in Highgate, but for years lived in High St, where she ran a boarding home.

Her son, Denis Betro, said it was likely her healthy lifestyle - she maintained a large and "wonderful" terraced flower and vegetable garden in High St and never drove, walking everywhere instead - had contributed to his mother's longevity.

He recalled her regularly cooking for 16 people, including her five children, most nights during the 1950s and 1960s.

Mrs Betro will receive a special acknowledgement at next month's "Gathering" in Dunedin of the Lebanese community, as the oldest member of the Dunedin community.
