The diverse backgrounds of carers at Dunedin's Marne Street Hospital were celebrated yesterday as part of a cultural awareness week.

Residents learnt about Zimbabwean and Fijian Indian cultures by tasting their traditional foods and listening to their music.

Hospital diversional therapist Debbie Wilson said the rest-home had a diverse staff of Chinese, Zimbabwean, Fijian Indian and Maori carers and an awareness week was a good way of getting the residents to learn more about them.

"You're never too old to learn new things," she said.

Fijian Indian carers Anjana Singh and Sangita Deri produced a range of their traditional foods including naan bread, chickpea curry, julam, a frozen flour and condensed milk treat, and chicken plough, a rice, chicken and garlic dish.

Resident Nessie Sinclair - self described as "the little monster in the loch they can't catch" - said it was "absolutely fantastic to learn about the cultures of the carers here".

"It's nice to hear about what their life would've been like at home."
