Council dusts off an old plan

The Dunedin City Council released plans to redevelop Logan Park in 2005, when Awatea St wasn't even a twinkle in the eye of a stadium builder.

At the time, the Logan Park development plan included proposals for new facilities for tennis, athletics, squash and the New Zealand Academy of Sport, South Island.

The plan was "designed to protect the essential character of Logan Park as it changes to meet increasing demands in the coming years".

A new sport and recreation complex for tertiary students was to replace Unipol, there would be an addition to the Caledonian Ground grandstand, more hockey and soccer facilities, and at least 400 extra car parks.

The work was to be paid for by the council, sports clubs and tertiary bodies.

The project dodged death early in 2006, when former mayor Peter Chin's casting vote saved its estimated budget of $11,570,000, which was due to be spent between the 2007-08 and the 2010-11 financial years.

But any prospect of the project continuing in that time frame was bulldozed when the stadium debate exploded mid-2006, and the council decided to put the plan on hold. .

The stadium is almost built, and Unipol, the Academy of Sport and the Highlanders are all moving to purpose-built facilities there.

Money is still in the annual plan for the other facilities, and the council has decided it is time dust off the plan to redevelop the city's major metropolitan sporting facility.
