Petition for Exchange post office

A petition aimed at convincing New Zealand Post to retain its post office in Dunedin's Exchange will hit the streets today.

Maritime Union organiser Victor Billot said the petition would be available for signing outside the metro post office and KiwiBank outlet in Princes St from noon until 2pm today.

Signatures would be collected for the next two weeks before the results were sent to New Zealand Post, he said.

The move comes after New Zealand Post last week announced its intention to close the Dunedin outlet in Princes St, citing low patronage and the proximity of other stores.

If confirmed, the closure would leave the Exchange without a post office for the first time in more than 150 years, with eight staff to be redeployed elsewhere or facing redundancy.

The post office was among seven around the country facing closure with a further seven stores to have services reduced, together affecting 90 staff.
