Auckland-based chiropractor Dean Julian Kenny pleaded guilty in the North Shore District Court last week to 28 Crimes Act charges linked to a series of invoices filed for work he did not do.
The three-test All Black, who played 110 games for Otago between 1981 and 1989, made the claims when he was working as an ACC-registered chiropractor at clinics in Orewa and Takapuna.
The ACC re-checked his bills after a complaint from a client in September last year, an ACC spokeswoman said yesterday.
It interviewed 28 patients, who all confirmed they did not get as many treatments as Kenny had claimed payment for, she said.
Between April 2007 and October 2009, ACC was invoiced for 16 sessions per patient for 28 patients, when some patients got only two sessions.
Kenny told ACC he booked in a "block of treatments" to have some sessions "in the bank" if patients needed more.
He had not refunded ACC for treatments not used by patients, the spokeswoman said.
Kenny last week pleaded guilty to 28 charges. He was sentenced to 225 hours' community work and ordered to repay $7956 to ACC.
ACC's claims management general manager Denise Cosgrove encouraged anyone who suspected ACC fraud to call 0508 ACC FRAUD.
