A crane toppled into an inlet on Otago Harbour at Burkes, near Dunedin, yesterday morning.

The Department of Labour is investigating the incident, which occurred as contractors were working to replace Bridge 218 on the main south railway line near Burkes, when the crane, which was on an adjacent staging platform, toppled into the inlet shortly after 10am.

No-one was injured in the incident.

A KiwiRail spokeswoman said the main bridge and line were not affected. A mobile crane was taken to the site yesterday afternoon, and removed several items while divers assessed the condition of the semi-submerged crane.

It was expected the crane would be removed in parts before a final lift, which would possibly take place at the weekend, she said.
