The gym, which opened in July 2011, recently won club of the year, in the category between 500 and 1500 members, at the New Zealand Fitness Industry Awards.
Judges said ABSolute Health and Fitness, situated in King Edward St, had the feel of an ''incredibly friendly family gym''.
Strong growth in customer satisfaction, retention, and key performance measures were indicative of a progressive and effective operation that actively sought and responded to genuinely valued member feedback.
Two years ago, the gym won the category for 500 members but it had since moved up a category as membership had grown.
Mr McKinlay was delighted with the gym's success, which he attributed to its customer service.
It was a competitive industry, with about 42 exercise facilities believed to be in the city.
In their entry to the awards, they said the gym was ''still a baby'' and, since its establishment, it had grown in both numbers and services offered.
Services included a fully equipped gym, group fitness classes, personal training, massage, nutrition and physiotherapy and there was still more that could be offered in the future, they said.
