This month, Pip Austin's business achievements were honoured by her secondary school, Columba College, in Dunedin. She is general manager Australia and Southeast Asia for New Zealand winemakers Sileni Estates Ltd.
What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?
I recently spent a month travelling with my sister in Asia, Europe and North Africa as part of my 50th birthday celebrations. As busy people living in different countries, we don't get to spend as much time together as we would like. Now we have some wonderful shared experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.
What smell do you find irresistible?
Lemongrass. Not only do I love the smell, but also the taste. It always makes me think of afew of my favourite places in Southeast Asia and delicious tom yum goong and larb gai.
What is your least favourite thing about humanity?
Greed, intolerance and prejudice. While it is hard to make change on large scale, I believe that as individuals we can all play our part to work towards a more tolerant and harmonious society.
What is one strong childhood memory?
Almost every childhood holiday involved a long car journey. Unlike Dad, who always wanted to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, my sister and I always managed to persuade Mum to make lots of fun stops on the way. It might have taken us ages to get to where we were going, but we now share Mum's love of travel and have many happy memories of that time.
What is your message?
Identify what makes you tick and what you are passionate about. Being able to incorporate these things into your career and personal life makes for a fulfilled and happy life.
