CD reviews: The Avalanches

Fans of The Avalanches have had to wait 16 years since Since I Left You.

Now, the sophomore effort has landed, brimful of the same mix-and-match methodology that made their debut album so quirky.

Like motes of dust floating on shafts of warm, nostalgic light, Wildflower's 21 tracks (of which half a dozen fail to reach 90 seconds) are constantly shifting, reflecting a DJ-centric approach in which samples are sliced and diced and rearranged to expert effect in a kaleidoscopic soundscape in which comical, childish skits (The Noisy Eater) rub up against half-remembered dreams (Colours).

Stitched together with borrowed elements, it is both of this world and out of this world.

Inspired.
