Janet Jackson has been forced to cancel a Sydney concert shortly before it was due to start.

Jackson cancelled her Sunday night concert at the Sydney Opera House citing vocal chord issues.

"It is with regret that Dainty Group announces that tonight's Janet Jackson Number Ones: Up Close and Personal concert at the Sydney Opera House cannot proceed," a statement released at 7.40pm (AEDT) on Sunday evening said.

The concert was scheduled to start at 8pm (AEDT).

"Doctors have ordered Miss Jackson to undertake vocal rest for the next two days, so she can complete the third and final show of her Australian tour this Tuesday night at the Sydney Opera House."

No replacement concert has been scheduled, with patrons advised they would receive a full refund.

Jackson interrupted her tour of Australia last week to return to America for the trial of her brother Michael's doctor Conrad Murray.

She performed in Sydney on Saturday night.

Ticket holders have been requested to contact the Sydney Opera House Box Office for refund information.
