Screaming teenage girls and a scattering of mums have crammed into a Sydney shopping mall to see the stars of Snow White and the Huntsman in the flesh.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart walked the red carpet in a slinky green and gold number while her Australian co-star Chris Hemsworth sported a suit and a shirt with most of the buttons undone.

Some mainly female fans were visibly teary outside the Australian premiere of the action-adventure epic.

As hundreds crammed the barricades Stewart, whose mother is from Australia, said she wished she could visit more often.

"I've only been here a few times, maybe like two or three times for not work," she told AAP from the sidelines of the event at Bondi Junction.

"God, it's ridiculous. I would like to come back more.

"I love the Aussies, I love coming here."

Her director Rupert Sanders described Stewart was "very feisty in real life".

"She gives a powerhouse performance and I'm very proud of the work she did," he said.

Stewart responded by saying she needed to be feisty to play a delicate Snow White.

"We kind of rip her heart out at some point and throw it back in her chest," she said.

"You need to be kind of feisty to be able to withstand that."

Hemsworth, who inspired even louder cheers and more requests for autographs, told AAP he wished he could have performed more stunts as the axe-wielding Huntsman.

"Occasionally I do them, when they let us. Occasionally the insurance companies step in and say, 'You might die on this one, pull back'," he said.

The Thor star said after starring in the Avengers, he'd lost weight for his latest role.

"I ended up losing a lot of weight for this," he said.

The only drawback with the press tour is leaving four-week-old baby daughter India behind in London with her mother, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky.

"It's very hard to leave."
