Peter Jackson's film about Herge's Tintin has premiered in the comic book hero's home town of Brussels in Belgium.

The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn is directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Jackson in the first collaboration between the movie-making giants.

The film, which uses actors to generate computer images, is planned to be the first of a trilogy. Jackson will direct the sequels.

Weta Digital has done the movie's motion capture and special effects.

The red carpet was rolled out for the Brussels premiere on Saturday with fans swamping the city centre.

Acrobats dangled from wires amid a parade of Tintin images and vintage cars.

Spielberg told reporters it was a great honour to bring Tintin home, AFP said.

He only discovered the stories of the intrepid boy reporter when he was in his 30s because the books weren't released in America.

"Hopefully, if the movie is popular in America, the books will be perhaps published. It will be a great thing," Spielberg said.

Tintin opens in Australia on Boxing Day.

It stars Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) as Tintin, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Herge, whose real name was Georges Remi, created Tintin in 1929 when he was in his early 20s.

The adventure comics have been read by millions worldwide.
