Parliament to be dissolved

The 48th Parliament will be formally dissolved at 3pm tomorrow.

The proclamation will be read out by Phillip O'Shea, New Zealand Herald of Arms Extraordinary to The Queen, as the authorised representative of the Governor-General Anand Satyanand.

The effect of the proclamation will be to bring the 48th Parliament to an end. It is also the first formal legal step towards the general election on November 8.

At the same time as tomorrow's ceremony Mr Satyanand will also issue a proclamation summoning a new Parliament to be called within six weeks of the return of the final election results.

The next step will be for the Governor-General to issue a writ to the Chief Electoral Officer directing him to conduct a general election of members of the House.

The writ will specify October 14 as the last day to nominate candidates.
