No conviction for racist Sydney bus rants

A woman who racially abused an Asian schoolboy on a Sydney bus has pleaded guilty to the offence but has escaped a conviction.

Susan Bernobich, 46, appeared briefly in Burwood Local Court today where she pleaded guilty to using offensive language in or near a public place or school.

Magistrate Robert Williams said he would not record a conviction but put her on a six-month good behaviour bond.

Bernobich apologised for her actions outside court, saying "I'm so sorry".

She was issued with a court appearance notice in June after a video of her abusing the teenager went viral on YouTube.

Court documents also included an apology from Bernobich, who said she was unemployed, suffers from depression, has family issues and was affected by alcohol during the incident.

Bernobich also wrote that she had received hate mail since the May 2 incident that occurred on an inner western Sydney bus.

The schoolboy was standing in the aisle in front of Bernobich because he had placed a box on his seat.

She said "Sit the f*** down" a number of times before telling the boy: "Get a passport bro".

"I'm born here," she went on to say.

"Come to this country and you can do whatever you want. Well you know what, you can't.

"Get back on your f***ing boat and get off."

She also made sexually disparaging remarks about the boy and his mother.

Bernobich then turned and verbally attacked two Asian children sitting behind her.

"No wonder youse get bashed," she said.

She also abused an elderly Asian woman.

"I don't know what you Asians are doing here freeloading. You should all go f***ing back to where you came from."
