Record rainfall hits Melbourne

Melbourne has been battered with record rainfall, with floodwater causing minor damage and leaving a number of people stranded in their cars.

The State Emergency Service (SES) received about 320 calls for help last night, with some 300 of those coming from metropolitan Melbourne.

Most calls were for low-level flooding and building damage.

SES spokesman Lachlan Quick said a number of people were rescued from their cars after they attempted to drive through floodwaters.

At 8am (AEST) today, the city had received 48.4mm of rain since 9am on Friday.

The 24-hour period ends at 9am on June 1, so it will be counted as June rainfall, and makes it a record for a June day.

The previous June daily record was 44.2mm, and has stood since June 22, 1904.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster James Taylor says the rainfall is almost equal to the entire June average of 49.2mm.

"We've had basically our whole month's rainfall within a day," he said.

Tullamarine received more than double its June average, with 79.2mm dumped over the suburb.

Mr Taylor said the rain had been consistent throughout the day on Friday, but became heavy as thunderstorms swept across the city about 11pm.

The highest rainfalls were recorded in the northern suburbs, with 105.8mm at Darebin Creek in Bundoora.

Mr Quick said it was disappointing people attempted to drive through floodwaters, placing themselves - and rescuers - in danger.

He said the SES expected more calls for help as people woke to find damage.

The rain is likely to continue today and ease to isolated showers tomorrow.
