Manhunt after woman abducted in Darwin

A man wanted after a violent abduction in which shots were fired at a women's refuge in Darwin is also facing charges in Queensland over a road rage attack that involved gunfire.

Joshua Stephen Walsh, 26, the former de facto partner of kidnapped woman Monique Edmondson, is on the run from Northern Territory police as they search for her.

Police say two men wearing hoodies forced themselves into a women's shelter in suburban Stuart Park about 10.45am (local time) yesterday and one of them fired a number of shots.

They then took away Ms Edmondson, 25, who hasn't been seen since.

It is uncertain whether Walsh or the other alleged offender fired the shots but no one in the women's shelter was hit by bullets during the incident.

Today, police said Walsh was facing serious charges in Queensland over an alleged road rage shooting on June 7.

During that incident, shots were fired and Walsh allegedly fled, before being arrested in the Northern Territory, where he has family.

He was extradited back to Queensland on June 20, and was granted bail on July 11 by a magistrate who allowed him to return to the Territory.

Earlier this month, Walsh was charged with aggravated assault in Darwin and was again granted bail.

Major Crime Commander with NT Police, Richard Bryson, said Walsh shouldn't be approached if members of the public see him.

Walsh is also believed to have had a domestic violence order in the Northern Territory issued against him, although not by the woman allegedly abducted yesterday.

When Walsh appeared before the NT courts, police had vigorously opposed him being granted bail, Cmdr Bryson said.

Police also believe they know who the second alleged abductor is, but are yet to release his name.

Neighbours near the women's refuge in Darwin described hearing screaming and the sound of the gunfire.

"We just heard what we thought was fireworks, but then there was lots of yelling and screaming and it wasn't fireworks. It was guns," said Francene Vrodos.

Another nearby resident, who didn't want to be named, said she thought firecrackers were going off when she heard the shots.

"Over the years, the security has been upgraded (at the shelter), but I hope they get a higher fence and that they are better protected," she said.

Police are on the lookout for a black 2005 Audi A4 with Queensland licence plates 221 RKX that they believe is linked to the abduction.
