Flies force political staff out of offices

Attorney General Chris Finlayson and Revenue Minister Peter Dunne have been forced from their offices in Wellington by tiny invaders.

An infestation of vinegar flies have forced staff in the offices on level 19 of Bowen House to be evacuated and the offices fumigated this afternoon.

Spokesman Ben Thomas said there were no more than a handful of flies, they were not Queensland fruit flies and he had no idea how they had made their way into the offices.

There were no warnings signs of their arrival. Warning signs of an infestation included clusters of insects, spots of faeces on the ceiling, fittings or pipes and maggots.

In 2010 a suspicious package arrived in Parliament and initiated an evacuation.

It was a box of cluster flies - a note was found on a box in cabinet minister David Carter's offices saying it contained a bomb.
