Arson at Wellington bus depot

A Wellington bus depot has been the target of an early morning arson for the second time in six months.

Fire fighters were called to the Karori bus depot on Darwin St about 3am after several members of the public called 111, Central Communication Fire Service shift inspector Mike Wanoa said.

Three buses were alight, and it took three fire trucks to extinguish the blaze by 3.30am.

"It was an arson attack," Mr Wanoa said.

In November, four Go Wellington buses in the depot were destroyed by a suspicious fire. Another two were also damaged.

At the time, NZ Bus estimated the damage to cost between $2 and $2.5 million, with the five buses involved all relatively new additions to its Go Wellington fleet.

Mr Wanoa said a fire investigator was at the site this morning.

It was being treated as suspicious. Police also attended, he said.

Residential flats that border the back of the bus depot were not threatened by the fire.
