John Key takes ill in New York

Prime Minister John Key has taken ill soon after arriving in New York, having to rest in a nearby pub for a while when walking up to his first engagement at the United Nations.

Mr Key had just spoken to media, and was walking up to the UN.

He needed to lean against a wall for a few minutes before going into a pub. He spent about five minutes in the pub before emerging, looking very pale.

He has gone on to the state luncheon hosted by UN Secretary Ban ki-Moon but may leave if he feels too ill.

Mr Key has spent the past week travelling in Europe, and had arrived off the 8 hour flight from Paris about two hours before he fell ill.

Mr Key has more than 50 engagements over the next four days, as he tries to secure support for New Zealand's bid for a seat on the Security Council.

In January Mr Key was taken to hospital after fainting in front of a full restaurant in Christchurch.

A spokeswoman later said the Prime Minister couldn't specify a reason for his faint, "but sometimes these things just happen."
