Royals cop minor NZF sanction

A Dunedin club received a quiet smack on the wrist from New Zealand Football last season.

The Dunedin City Royals copped a minor sanction from the governing body for a breach of licensing requirements.

It is understood the indiscretion was considered minor and both the club and NZF have long considered the matter resolved.

A source told the Otago Daily Times the Royals were fined $1750 with $1250 suspended, but neither NZF nor the Royals would confirm that.

The licensing requirements to take part in national league football are wide-ranging.

Among them are rules around a team having coaches with various levels of New Zealand/Oceania licences.

An NZF statement suggested it was within that area that the Royals had a breach.

The Royals were "sanctioned after a breach of club licensing requirements [the requirements a club need to be able to meet to compete in the league, such as having a B licence-qualified head coach]".

The Dunedin club were never in danger of a more severe punishment as NZF considered the breach so minor.

The Royals had since successfully reapplied to gain their national league licence in 2024.

"The club is aware of its ongoing obligation to meet the licensing requirements during the 2024 season and New Zealand Football consider the matter from 2023 resolved."
