The Taieri side was full of senior club players and met a competitive Southern team in the final which included Otago halfback Josh Walden and former Otago No 8 Mika Mafi.
But Taieri, which had done little training for the event and only came together on the morning of the tournament, was too sharp for Southern, running out 29-12 victors.
Shannon Young was sharp in the forwards for Taieri in what was a willing encounter.
In the masters grade, the Spartans team won the final 24-7. It featured a mixture of experienced players and also actor Pua Magasiva, who plays Vinnie on Shortland Street.
There were 15 teams in the tournament — 10 in the open section and five in the masters section.
Tournament organiser Shane Waldron said the tournament had gone well, with a good crowd turning up throughout the day.
Proceeds of the day went to the Injured Rugby Players Fund. Waldron said the total amount raised had yet to be finalised.
