Highlanders prop Josh Hohneck is heading to the United Kingdom and could wear the white jersey of England one day.

Gloucester Rugby yesterday announced the signing of Hohneck and he will head to the club at the end of the Highlanders' season.

The 30-year-old, who was due to start off the bench for the Highlanders last night, is a good pick-up for the Gloucester club, which sits eighth in the premiership ladder.

He will join five other New Zealanders at the club: Tom Marshall, Willi Heinz, John Afoa and Jeremy Thrush while former Otago and Highlanders lock Joe Latta signed for the club last year on a two year deal.

Hohneck has been a revelation for the Highlanders since he came south at the start of last year.

He played in all but one game for the Highlanders in 2015 in the side's run to the title.

A tighthead prop who can also play on the loosehead, Hohneck was a latecomer to rugby who started playing as a No 8 and only switched to the front row after he left school.

His decision to move offshore gives him a chance to earn some good cash and he also could get the chance to play international rugby.

With an English mother, and therefore English-qualified, he has the chance to play for England and also - luckily for Gloucester - does not count as an overseas player.

Hohneck said in a statement he was keen to get involved in England.

"It's a very big step for me, and one I'm really looking forward to. I've watched a lot of English rugby, spoken to a lot of people who have played there and I can't wait to get involved,'' he said.

Hohneck, who played for the Chiefs before heading south, said he was totally committed to playing well for the Highlanders until the end of the season.

The Highlanders have some depth at tighthead prop, with Ross Geldenhuys and Siosuia Halanukonuka both solid performers in the position.

There is also some speculation over the future of Highlanders first five-eighth Marty Banks.

Banks, who had a hamstring injury and has yet to play for the Highlanders this season, is believed to be considering a deal to move to the Benetton club in Italy.

Meanwhile a fair smattering of Highlanders are scheduled to play club rugby today.

Luke Whitelock and Jason Emery are expected to play for Alhambra-Union while Gareth Evans will play for Dunedin.

Jackson Hemopo, Jack Wilson and Ross Geldenhuys will front for Green Island while Josh Renton and Josh Hohneck will turn out for Kaikorai.

Craig Millar and Mark Reddish will appear for Pirates and Tei Walden and Ryan Tongia will play for Southern.

James Lentjes and Hayden Parker are scheduled to play for Taieri while Banks, Fumiaki Tanaka and Greg Pleasants-Tate are set to play for Zingari-Richmond.

Some players may not turn out if they ended up playing for a period in last night's match against the Force.
