Heat on for Highlanders

From the igloo to the desert. That's what it may feel for the Highlanders over the next few days - but they are just going to suck it up and get on with it.

The Highlanders side for the tens tournament in Brisbane arrived in Queensland on Wednesday and is getting acclimatised to the hot temperatures.

With the mercury due to hit above 35degC over the weekend in Brisbane it is going to be very hot for the teams taking part in the inaugural  tournament.

Highlanders tens coach Jon Preston admitted it was hot and a bit different from what they had been experiencing in Dunedin.

"Coming from what we had then it is hot, there is no doubt about that," he said.

"But it is what it is. You’ve just got to rip into it."

Preston said the teams could use up to eight substitutes in any one game and they could come on at any time.

The Wellington Phoenix played a game in Adelaide earlier this month when the temperature reached 39degC and there were drinks breaks during the match. That led to calls about the risks of playing games in such heat.

But a game of tens is only 10 minutes each way and, with unlimited substitutions, the stress on the players should not be too bad.

The Highlanders, though, do have to play their first game - against the Brumbies -  just before 2pm (Brisbane time) tomorrow, when it will be particularly hot, while the side’s other game tomorrow is at 7pm (Brisbane time), against the Hurricanes.

The final pool game on Sunday, against the Bulls, will be just after noon in Brisbane.

Brisbane is three hours behind New Zealand.
