Racing: Formline, grass-track record points to Al Raza

There are plenty of reasons for Geoff and Jude Knight to be confident of Al Raza's chances in tomorrow's Waikouaiti Cup.

Firstly, there's her formline - 411413.

Next, there's her grass track form - one from one.

And finally, her Oamaru Cup win tells punters that tomorrow's 3200m feature will not be a few hundred metres too far.

Everything adds up to a bold showing from the mare when she steps from her 10m handicap, nine days after a brave third at Addington.

''Every time she steps off she shows us something a bit different,'' Geoff Knight said.

''She used to be a forward runner, then at Oamaru she proved she could come from the back.

''Then the other day she made a mid-race move and full credit to her - she couldn't do any better. Her time was super and she was up against a couple of nice horses.''

Any doubts about Al Raza's staying ability were quashed with the final 200m of her Oamaru Cup win.

Knight puts down her staying prowess to her ability to relax.

''She gets a bit lazy and as soon as you pull the pull-down blinds, she gets going again. It's just a trait she's got.

''That's why the 3000m at Oamaru and the 3200m tomorrow won't worry her - because she's so relaxed.

''If she can get saved up and not make a mid-race move, I think she's going to be right in the hunt.''

Matthew Williamson opted to drive Al Raza over Quick As A Trick, who will be steered by Nathan Williamson.

''He never even spoke to me about it - he just said Nathan was going to drive Quick As A Trick this time. He really likes the mare.''

The pull-down blinds will also be employed with Bettordean in race 4, after he ran a close-up third to Sumtala at Wyndham last Sunday.

''It was a good effort but the pull-down blinds go on tomorrow and he's got gate speed, so we'll probably be having a go at going forward and keeping him handy.

''In that line-up over that distance, I'd say he'll be pretty hard to beat.''

An awkward draw did not stop Knight choosing Onedin Onyx over Jaccka Emberz in race 9, provided he gets a good run from barrier one on the second line.

''His work this week has been really good and he's going to get an economical run on the fence.

''If he gets any sort of luck - and he's going to need some luck - he'll be in the hunt too.''

Tagatease suffered a suspected bowed tendon after his win at Winton on Thursday and is scratched.
