Cool change timely

Roxburgh trainer Jude Knight had a smile as the temperature dropped at the start of the Forbury Park meeting last night.

It meant Onedin Onyx's chances of winning the c1 2700m pace had got a lot better.

Despite growing up in Roxburgh, the son of Changeover does not handle heat well, which became clear when he made his debut last season.

‘‘We worried a little bit when he was 3 that he was better with his breathing when it was a little bit cooler,'' Knight said.

‘‘At the end of the day, his breathing and recovery rate is so much better when it's cooler. He's a very heavy breather and when it's cooler, he copes with it a lot better.''

Temperatures in the high teens and low 20s suit the 4yr-old more, and a wind problem has also been dealt with.

The horse had ‘‘definitely turned the corner''.

A respiratory problem has also been uncovered with Zenmach, who has been below par in recent starts.

Co-trainer Geoff Knight said tests had revealed the smart 3yr-old has asthma, and he will be treated with an inhaler.

Karitane breeder Barrie Barber has solved one problem - he will never be short of a motel bed in Oamaru.

Barber set up the Gold Chip Syndicate, which includes five moteliers from Oamaru in its 10-strong ownership.

Macy Blue Chip provided the syndicate with six wins, including three of her last four starts.

Junior driver Maruia Parker has steered the 5yr-old mare to four of those wins.
