Now it is her role to make sure her adopted country's national team is at its strongest.
The former England and New Zealand international was appointed to the national selection panel last week. She joins the newly appointed Raewyn Henry and established selectors Wai Taumaunu, Marg Forsyth and Gael Nagaiya.
Morrison, who played 11 tests for England and five in the Silver Ferns bib, decided to apply for the role to show ambition. She did not expect to get the job.
"It is pretty special to be part of the panel which selects the top players in the country," Morrison said.
"It is very exciting. To be honest, I put my name in the hat to let them know I was interested and it was a huge surprise to get it."
Morrison is the only South Island-based selector and will be kept busy during the ANZ Championship getting around the games which are staged in Dunedin, Invercargill and Christchurch.
It is a paid role but Morrison will continue in her role with Netball Otago as the game development officer.
"I'll probably be looking at the South Island-based players at this stage. It is basically about keeping an eye on players and tracking their progress.
"Also looking at specifics which have already been identified and coming up with a [report] at the end of the season for the player to have a look at and at what they have to work on."
Morrison (36) won a silver medal with the Silver Ferns at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and last played for Otago in 2009.
She has three children - Lucy (5), Jack (3) and Harry (17 months) - with husband Paul.
