Defending champion Craighead Diocesan has made it through to the A grade semifinals of the South Island secondary schools tournament in Dunedin.
The Timaru school recorded impressive wins against the Natalie Avellino-coached Southland Girls' High School (37-25) and the Janine Southby-coached Columba College (49-26) yesterday to sweep into the final four.
Craighead will play Waimea College, while Marian College and Marlborough Girls' High School will meet in the other semifinal.
Avellino and Southby teamed up as co-coaches with the Steel this season and are in competition for the job next season when the franchise will revert to a traditional head coaching structure.
Avellino got one over her rival when Southland Girls' beat Columba College on Tuesday.
Southland Girls' beat Nelson Girls' 39-27 yesterday and can still finish as high as fifth with a good performance today.
Columba finished third last year but has slipped down the rankings and will play off for 9th-12th.
In the B grade semifinals, Middleton Grange will play South Otago High School, and Menzies College will play Cashmere High School.
The Catlins Area School will play Collingwood Area School in the C grade semifinal, and Aparima College plays Fiordland College.
